Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • Melted chocolate for dipping
  • Sprinkles for decoration
  • Jam or custard for filling

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk and one tablespoon of granulated sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Make the Dough: In a larger bowl, combine remaining sugar, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add activated yeast mixture and mix. Gradually add flour and salt until a rough dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Doughnuts: Punch down the dough, roll out to ½ inch thick, and cut out doughnut shapes.
  6. Second Rise: Cover shaped doughnuts and let rise for about 30 minutes.
  7. Fry the Doughnuts: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry each doughnut for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Coat in Sugar & Serve: Roll warm doughnuts in sugar. Dip in chocolate and decorate or fill with jam or custard as desired.
