Monte Cristo French Toast Casserole

A delightful combination of savory ham and turkey with sweet custard and Swiss cheese, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a light dinner.

  • 6 slices of French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup honey ham, diced
  • 1 cup turkey, diced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  3. Cut the French bread into small cubes, about one inch in size.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  5. Place the cubed French bread in the greased baking dish and pour the custard mixture over the bread.
  6. Evenly distribute the diced ham, turkey, and shredded Swiss cheese over the soaked bread.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar with the melted butter and drizzle this mixture over the casserole.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm with optional garnishes such as powdered sugar or maple syrup.

Notes

Day-old bread works best for this recipe. You can prepare it the night before for convenience.
